Description
Comfrey Leaf is an herb that is intended for external use only due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are considered potentially toxic to internal organs such as the liver. But for External Use, Comfrey Herb has been considered a Hero due to its long history of being used as a wound healer. The traditional use of comfrey poultices go back generations for healing skin conditions like burns, swelling and bruises. Comfrey has been called knitbone due to the common belief that it can help with wound healing like sprains and broken bones.
The Comfrey Plant includes anti-inflammatory compounds making it a helpful ingredient in homemade creams for soothing and treating inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, gout, and thrombophlebitis.
You can make a simple Comfrey Leaf Poultice by putting dried flakes or powder into a bowl. Then add enough boiling water to wet and moisten the herbs to a soft consistency without being too watery. Allow the herbs to cool to a slightly hot or warm temperature. Place the herbs directly on the sore if it is not open or on top of a thin cloth to be sure the comfrey poultice is as close to the skin as possible. Try to keep the poultice from drying out by wrapping with a wet bandage, towel or covering with a piece of plastic wrap. You can drip some of the excess water on to the poultice if needed or replace it with a new one every few hours.
